MIT finally comes up with a robot which can kill Coronavirus in large warehouses

MIT CSAIL director and project lead Daniela Rus says the insights they received from the work at GBFB has highlighted several algorithmic challenges

Researchers believe UV light is the answer to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic. Studies going on in MIT focus on this technology in order to autonomously disinfect environments, like factories, restaurants, supermarkets, and schools. The system is capable of mapping a given space, and it can navigate between waypoints and other specified areas. The President of the United States was the first person to talk about administering UV light to kill the Coronavirus.

Recently Zagg launched a UVC light-based sanitizing station for all your smartphones. UVC light is sometimes used to sterilize patient rooms and other medical settings. The MTA is currently testing UV lightboxes as a way to disinfect subways and buses. Researchers have also seen UV light used to clean humidifiers and airplane bathrooms.

MIT CSAIL develops the UV light-based robot for warehouses

Alyssa Pierson, CSAIL research scientist and a technical lead on this project, says as they drive the robot around the food bank, they are also researching new control policies that will allow the robot to adapt to changes in the environment and ensure all areas receive the proper estimated dosage. Research is focused on a remote operation to minimize human supervision, and therefore, the additional risk of spreading Coronavirus while running the system.

As of now, the researchers are excited to see the UVC disinfecting robot support the community in the time of need. MIT CSAIL director and project lead Daniela Rus says the insights they received from the work at GBFB has highlights several algorithmic challenges. The researchers plan to tackle these in order to extend the scope of autonomous UV disinfection robots in complex spaces, including dorms, schools, airplanes, and grocery stores.
