NASA Kepler gives clues about alien life! New research shows the existence of a billion Earth-like planets

Scientists are currently busy studying planets in outer space. New research shows the presence of life on an Earth-like planet in our very own galaxy. Turns out there is not only one such planet but billions of them. According to another research Milky Way Galaxy is home to almost 36 actively intelligent civilizations.  The research study published in The Astronomical Journal, the researchers calculated that there was an upper limit of 0.18 Earth-like planets per G-type main-sequence stars like our sun.

The Milky Way Galaxy is home to almost 400 billion stars, while 7% of them are G-Type. This means almost 6 billion of these star systems are likely to possess a planet just like Earth. Jaymie Mathew an Astronomer from the University of British Columbia, is the co-author of this study.

Milky Way Galaxy: Home to 6 billion Earth-like planets

Earth-like planets are those that are rocky, roughly the same size as Earth and orbiting sun-like G-type stars. Furthermore, they lie in the habitable zone of their host star, a region in which liquid water, a key life component, can exist on the planet’s surface.

  1. To address this issue, the authors of the latest research paper used a computer simulation technique known as “forward modeling” to examine an independent planet catalog compiled using data on around 200,000 stars that were observed by NASA’s now-retired Kepler space telescope.

However, estimating the number of such planets in the Milky Way Galaxy is no easy task. Detecting Earth-like planets is challenging because they are relatively small and tend to orbit their stars at large distances. Furthermore, their long orbital periods means that scientists need to take several years of observations to witness enough transits to identify the planet.

Thus, new estimates are invaluable in bringing the exoplanet community toward consensus. This is the primary motivation behind this research.
